A personal statement from Professor Ali Ghoz

This page shares Professor Ghoz's own approach to diagnosis, treatment, surgery, recovery and the patient journey.

Who Am I

I am a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, with a focus on hip and knee operations. After completing my basic surgical training at the Yorkshire School of Surgery and obtaining my FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2011, I earned an MSc in Musculoskeletal Sciences from Oxford University.

I have significant expertise in both primary and revision hip and knee surgeries, including advanced techniques such as muscle-sparing anterior hip replacement, hip resurfacing, partial and total knee replacements, and computer-assisted and robotic surgeries.

I have completed prestigious fellowships at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, and have published widely in my field. I teach internationally, including at the Oxford University Miller Orthopaedic Review Course, and serve as a visiting Professor at Chisinau University Hospital and Deraya University. My global experience spans Australia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia.

I am the Chair of MDT at The Cromwell Hospital, a role I have held since 2021. I am also the Medical Director for VisitHealth, a healthcare clinic offering appointments with experienced specialists, fast diagnostic tests, immediate and accurate results and bespoke health plans.

The treatment journey

From first appointment to recovery

Professor Ghoz describes the journey from booking and diagnosis through to treatment, surgery and the return to daily life.

1. Booking

Appointments are arranged by a team of personal assistants to provide a smooth booking experience and help patients access the earliest suitable appointment.

2. Diagnosis

Correct and thoughtful diagnosis is the starting point, using history, examination, imaging and appropriate investigations to understand the main complaint.

3. Treatment

Treatment planning is based on diagnosis, patient needs, safety, quality and clear communication about the benefits and risks of each option.

4. Recovery

The goal is to help patients see life again without pain, move freely without limitations and return to the activities that revive their spirit.

Beginning of a Treatment Journey

Booking an appointment is arranged by a team of personal assistants to provide a smooth booking experience on the spot. Patients no longer have to wait unnecessarily for an appointment, as the earliest suitable slots are sorted and provided to make sure each patient can be fitted in.

This is especially important when emergencies need to be dealt with and diagnosed as soon as possible.

Diagnosis

50% of treatment is achieved through correct and thoughtful diagnosis. Therefore, the primary step I take is to establish a correct diagnosis, which is mostly decided after collecting all relevant information, starting from the chief complaint and then further evaluating the condition through the necessary diagnostic means.

Diagnostic methods range from a clinical examination and full medical history to radiographic investigations such as MRI scans, CT scans or X-rays, and pathology tests such as blood tests. After examining all relevant information, I diagnose and resolve the main complaint, just like fitting in the missing puzzle piece.

Surgical Experience

After deciding on surgery as the necessary treatment plan, I make sure that patients receive a positive surgical experience, as this is an important step reflecting on their lives as well as their loved ones.

I choose quality over quantity by making sure that the materials used are efficient and selected to provide maximal improvement results with the least possible risks or complications.

I believe that integrity is the main communication method with patients. I explain the benefits and risks of every treatment to enlighten the patient and raise awareness about new, efficient and safe procedures.

It is of utter importance for every medical professional to frequently seek self-development through self-learning, alongside taking part in team-oriented MDTs to discuss innovations within the medical field.

End of a Treatment Journey

Helping patients see life again without pain

I aim to see the change I create throughout the treatment journey my patients go through. The change I work on is the ability of my patients to see life again without pain, to be able to move freely without limitations and to take part in the activities that revive their spirits.
