What are Sprains and Strains?
Sprains involve the stretching or tearing of ligaments, while strains involve the stretching or tearing of muscles or tendons. Both injuries can occur in the foot and ankle due to sudden twists, falls, or overuse.
Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness
- Swelling and bruising
- Limited range of motion
- Muscle spasms or weakness (strains)
Treatment
- Rest: Avoiding activities that exacerbate the injury.
- Ice: Applying ice packs to reduce swelling and pain.
- Compression: Using bandages or braces to support the area.
- Elevation: Keeping the foot elevated to decrease swelling.
- Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen and restore function.
Recovery
Recovery time varies but generally ranges from a few days to several weeks, depending on the severity of the injury.
