Minimally invasive hip surgery has gained increasing attention as patients look for faster recovery and less disruption to daily life. But what does it actually involve?

What is minimally invasive hip surgery?

This approach uses smaller incisions and muscle-sparing techniques compared to traditional hip replacement.

The goal is to reduce tissue damage while still achieving a safe and effective outcome.

How is it different from traditional surgery?

Key differences include:

Smaller incision

Less muscle disruption

Potentially reduced pain post-operatively

However, the implant and overall goals of surgery remain the same.

What are the benefits?

Patients may experience:

Shorter hospital stay

Faster initial recovery

Earlier mobilisation

That said, long-term outcomes are similar to traditional approaches.

Are there any risks?

Minimally invasive techniques can be technically demanding.

Not all patients are suitable, particularly:

Those with complex anatomy

Revision surgery cases

Severe deformity

What is recovery like?

Recovery still requires:

Physiotherapy

Gradual return to activity

Commitment to rehabilitation

Minimally invasive does not mean “minor surgery.”

Conclusion

Minimally invasive hip surgery can offer meaningful early recovery benefits, but it is not appropriate for everyone. The choice of surgical approach should always be tailored to the individual patient.

Was really wonderful to hear from my patient Laura Magnani, to get to see her fully mobile, loving life and giving my work a thorough test!

I first treated Laura for a Revision left knee in 2024, a Primary total right hip replacement in late 2025 and then in January of this year, a Revision right knee replacement and reconstruction of lateral collateral ligament complex.

Thank you Laura for your kind words and pictures!

From Laura:

Happy Monday from India .. my friend said I should send you these photos (it beats all the ones of wounds and scars) to show that my leg is working and I can climb into the safari trucks and into boats to look at the crocodiles!

Advances in technology are transforming orthopaedic surgery, and one of the most talked-about developments is the use of robotics in joint replacement.

But what does “robotic surgery” actually mean for patients?

What is robotic-assisted surgery?

Robotic systems do not replace the surgeon. Instead, they enhance precision by providing real-time data and guidance during the procedure.

The surgeon remains fully in control at all times.

How does it work?

Before surgery, imaging (such as CT scans) is used to create a 3D model of the joint. During the operation, the robotic system helps guide bone preparation and implant positioning with a high degree of accuracy.

Why does precision matter?

Small differences in implant positioning can affect:

Joint function

Implant longevity

Risk of complications

Robotic systems help achieve consistent, reproducible alignment.

Does it improve recovery?

Some studies suggest:

Less soft tissue damage

Improved early function

Potentially faster recovery

However, outcomes still depend heavily on surgical expertise and patient factors.

Who is suitable?

Robotic-assisted surgery may be particularly beneficial for:

Patients with complex anatomy

Those requiring precise alignment correction

Revision cases

Limitations and considerations

Not all centres offer robotic systems

It may increase operative time in some cases

Long-term data is still evolving

Conclusion

Robotic-assisted joint replacement represents a significant step forward in surgical precision. While it is not a guarantee of better outcomes, it is a valuable tool that can enhance the accuracy and consistency of modern orthopaedic procedures.

Arthrosamid has emerged as an innovative treatment option for patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis, particularly those seeking to delay or avoid surgery. However, as with any relatively new therapy, misconceptions are common. These misunderstandings can lead to unrealistic expectations or unnecessary hesitation.

Here, we address some of the most frequent myths.

Myth 1: Arthrosamid is just another “gel injection”

This is perhaps the most common misconception. While both Arthrosamid and hyaluronic acid injections are delivered into the joint, they are fundamentally different.

Arthrosamid is a polyacrylamide hydrogel that integrates into the synovial lining of the knee, helping to cushion and stabilise the joint over time. Traditional “gel injections” are temporary lubricants that are gradually broken down.

Myth 2: Arthrosamid replaces knee replacement surgery

Arthrosamid is not a cure for osteoarthritis. Instead, it is a symptom-modifying treatment designed to reduce pain and improve function.

For some patients, it may delay the need for surgery. However, those with advanced joint damage may still ultimately require joint replacement.

Myth 3: Results are immediate

Unlike corticosteroid injections, which can provide rapid relief, Arthrosamid works gradually.

Most patients begin to notice improvement over several weeks, with continued benefit over months as the hydrogel integrates within the joint.

Myth 4: It will limit future surgical options

There is no evidence to suggest that Arthrosamid negatively impacts future knee replacement surgery.

In fact, it is often used as a bridging treatment, helping patients manage symptoms before committing to surgery.

What patients should understand

It is a longer-acting, non-surgical option

Results are progressive, not instant

It is best suited to mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis

Conclusion

Arthrosamid represents a promising development in the management of knee osteoarthritis, but like all treatments, it must be understood in context. Clear expectations are key to achieving the best outcomes.

Introduction Private treatments come with a cost — but how does Arthrosamid compare in terms of value for money?

Typical UK Prices The cost ranges from £2,000 to £3,000 per injection, depending on the clinic, location, and whether follow-up is included. Some centres may offer payment plans or bundles with consultation and imaging.

What’s Included? Most providers include:

Orthopaedic consultation

Diagnostic imaging (e.g. ultrasound or MRI)

The Arthrosamid injection itself

Post-procedure advice and follow-up

Is It Worth It? Given the potential for years of pain relief from a single injection, many patients consider it a worthwhile investment. When compared with the cost of ongoing physiotherapy, repeated steroid injections, or extended time off work, the one-time expense can be more economical.

Conclusion While not cheap, Arthrosamid can be cost-effective compared to ongoing physio, meds, or surgery. Many patients report a significant improvement in quality of life. the best results. Imaging, such as X-rays or MRI, is key in evaluating whether Arthrosamid is likely to be effective.

Introduction What happens after the injection? Here’s how to optimise your results and stay active long-term.

Immediate Recovery Mild swelling or stiffness may occur for a few days. Light walking is encouraged, but avoid heavy activity for 1–2 weeks. Driving is usually safe after 24 hours, depending on comfort.

Aftercare Advice

Ice and elevate the knee if sore

Avoid high-impact exercise (e.g. running) in the first 2 weeks

Follow your surgeon’s rehab plan

Maintain a healthy weight to reduce pressure on the joint

Continue any prescribed physiotherapy exercises

Long-Term Outlook Most patients experience gradual improvement over 6–12 weeks. Relief often lasts 2–5 years, depending on activity level and joint condition. Regular check-ups can help monitor your progress.

Conclusion With proper care, Arthrosamid can help you return to an active lifestyle without the need for surgery. Patients often report improved sleep, reduced reliance on medication, and enhanced quality of life.

Introduction Not everyone is a candidate for Arthrosamid. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand whether it might be right for you.

Who Can Have It

Adults with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis

Those unsuitable or unwilling to undergo surgery

Patients who haven’t responded to simpler treatments

Individuals looking for long-term pain relief without repeated injections

Who Shouldn’t Have It

Patients with severe (bone-on-bone) arthritis where joint space is nearly gone

Active knee infections or systemic infection

Allergy to polyacrylamide (very rare)

People who have had previous knee replacements in the same joint

Introduction There are many injectable treatments for knee pain — but which one is right for you? Each option has different mechanisms, timeframes, and side effects.

Steroid Injections Quick relief but short-lived. May cause cartilage damage with repeated use. They’re useful for acute flare-ups but not ideal for long-term management.

Hyaluronic Acid Mixed results. Some patients feel better; others do not. Effects are temporary, lasting around 6 months. It mimics natural joint fluid but doesn’t integrate with joint tissue like Arthrosamid.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Uses your own blood to promote healing. Promising but results are variable. It’s often more expensive, and evidence on long-term outcomes remains mixed.

Arthrosamid Long-lasting with one injection. Doesn’t rely on the body’s healing capacity. It physically remains in the joint, providing structural benefit as well as symptom relief.

Conclusion Each treatment has pros and cons. For sustained relief with minimal side effects, Arthrosamid is an increasingly preferred choice. Your orthopaedic specialist can guide the best option based on your condition.
